Absolute beginners first guitar.?!
Question: I'm really eager to jump straight in and buy an electric guitar but my gut tells me that that would be foolish, can anyone offer any suggestions or advice about a starting guitar?
Many thanks.

See previous question that you asked.
as for me.. why don't you start with classic or acoustic guitar first.. when you kind of expert in classic.. you'll automaticly feel easy to play electric guitar..

An electric guitar is a great choice for a beginner because they are easier to play (less string tension). Stratocaster-style guitars are great, you could find a kit with a guitar and amp for around $200. Spend a few bucks to get the instrument set up, and a month of lessons should cost about $60.
alright you can go either way, acoustic or electric
I think it all depends on what kind of music you are into, acoustic guitars sound great, but electrics are much more versatile, you really can't go wrong either way
as for kinds, it's always nice to stick with well-knows (gibson, fender... etc.) there are also certain local brands around your area that might be pretty decent as well, but make sure someone with a good knowledge of guitars is there with ya to find a good one, because not all guitar models are exactly alike
there are some good starting guitars to take a look at:
fender squires are nice (my first electric was a fender squire stratocaster), they are sometimes packaged with an amp and the guitar essentialls
I'm not too sure about other brands, but i'm sure they have good guitar/amp combos as well
for acoustic brands you have MANY options, and just pick the one you think sounds the best, you will know when you strum chords on the right one
now for starting to play guitar, lessons are always helpful, but there is also a lot of good info online as well, reading music can be wayyyy difficult for guitar, so if you want to jump right into some songs check out guitar tablature or "tabs", a much easier but sometimes frowned upon way to learn to play songs (that's what i still use to this day)
learning a few songs can be good to get you a little familiar to chord progressions and stuff like that, so you can get a little of that down
oh but FIRST, look up some basic chord shapes online or something, basic chords such as a,g,d,e are essential to learn
but most importantly: have FUN
good luck with your guitar experience
