Interesting question.
I dont think they actually give out messages, more political metal bands eg.Napalm Death might, and gothic bands tend to appeal to the more darker, romantic side of life.It depends on how weak and gullible the individual is, eg if one listens to Dark Funeral, Dimmu Borgir and Mayhem, then decides to follow suite and believes the lyrics, starts worshipping Satan.That to me is pathetic, and im a metal devotee. If you were to listen to, say Cannibal Corpse, and if you want to hear their message, then killing, gutting, severing, having sex with corpses is what they are saying is cool, I think not.
I cant speak for alternative bands, because its not my scene, I do believe that there is an element of anger and hate in metal, and maybe there is a message: not to take any s**t off people. Thats what I hear anyway.
depends on who you listen to or who you classify as "goth/metal" i love metal, and most metal songs hav really good meanings to them, but stupid ppl look down upon the songs and judge the book by the cover for these amazing songs. meanings could be anywhere from broken hearts to political messages. amazing stuff.
To me I find Gothic and Metal music full of emotion that provides an amazing feeling. They have deep thoughtful, meaningful lyrics that reveal the truth. Whether about surviving in the frontlines of war, or wishing hate and destruction upon the human race. Alternative Rock on the other hand... well I have heard a lot of Alternative Rock music from my friends and the lyrical themes that I've heard are just about relationships, or about a special someone. Now I know Gothic can have those lyrical themes to but they express it in a different way. Just like Emo music is whiny but when Metal creates emotional music it creates it in a different perspective.
