Most Romantically Painful Song Ever?!

Question: I'm looking for a cathartic song to purge negative, romantic feelings and I need help finding one that's about unrequited love.

Rule: It has to be a song that has a special meaning to you that conjures a sad/happy-sad moment.

Also, you get bonus points if it's from the 90s. And the person who chooses the best song gets best answer.

Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye circa 1994 off of his album Grace

its about the demise of a relationship even though love is still present.....lived it, it brings back bittersweet memories of and ex. Loved him to death but it just couldn't work.

Lyrics:

This is our last goodbye
I hate to feel the love between us die.
But it's over
Just hear this and then I'll go:
You gave me more to live for,
More than you'll ever know.

Well, this is our last embrace,
Must I dream and always see your face?
Why can't we overcome this wall?
Baby, maybe it's just because I didn't know you at all.

Kiss me, please kiss me,
But kiss me out of desire, babe, and not consolation.
Oh, you know it makes me so angry 'cause I know that in time
I'll only make you cry, this is our last goodbye.

Did you say, "No, this can't happen to me"?
And did you rush to the phone to call?
Was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind saying,
"Maybe, you didn't know him at all,
you didn't know him at all,
oh, you didn't know"?

Well, the bells out in the church tower chime,
Burning clues into this heart of mine.
Thinking so hard on her soft eyes, and the memories
Offer signs that it's over, it's over.

well for me..i love the song of celine Dion because you love me..cause it's from the movie Up Close and peronal..love that song and movie..

That's easy. "He Stopped Loving her Today" by George Jones. It came out mid ninties and is, undoubtally the SADDEST song I have ever encountered.

U don't know my name-Alicia keys

Secret Lovers by Atlantic Starr...it speaks for itself, secret lovers that's what we are, trying so hard to hide the way we feel, cause we both belong to someone else but we can't let go cause what we feel is oh so real...I had a boyfriend who had a girlfriend and he was too chicken poop to let her go, but wanted me to stay on the shelf waiting for him to make up his mind. I still get warm fuzzies thinking about him, but then I remember the invitation to his wedding that broke my heart...

Weird, obscure song, late 90s. Called "Fly" by a Canadian band called Moxy Fruvous...

video: http://www.youtube.com/v/bu0HdSw6l1Q&rel...

lyrics:
When you've played out As the World Turns
You don't need soaps to clean your mind
Every little child learns
If you can't see dreams, your eyes are blind
Was it just a fool's impression?
Such an antiquated passion.
On the day they both conspired to
ride the midway after dark
They had enough of their pride to not bring
coins to this amusement park
And she held his hand to follow
And he held his breath, then let go
They crouched down low.
Sat in the front row.
Untied the rope so they could fly
Hold on tight, let's get it just right,
We'll take our last flight. You and I.
When you're getting tired of normal
You sometimes think you've lost your will
You see something less formal
And reconcile to try to move in for the thrill
Was it breaking down like most do?
Or searching for happiness where you're supposed to?
So they cried inside while their eyes smiled
There was no turning back for two
Erase the memory stockpile
All alone, and one thing left to do
In the rollercoaster's shadow,
They took off their shoes and bared their souls
They crouched down low.
Sat in the front row
Untied the rope so they could fly
Hold on tight, let's get it just right
We'll take our last flight. You and I.
And she held his hand to follow
And he held his breath, then let go
They crouched down low
Sat in the front row
Untied the rope so they could fly
Hold on tight, let's get it just right,
We'll take our last flight.
You and I.

Hurt NIN - The Downward Spiral

"To Make You Feel My Love" - Garth Brooks

Not quite about unrequited love, but close-
Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough - Paty Smyth and Don Henley

At This Moment - Billy Vera and the Beaters, about finding out the one you love is not in love with you.

Take It On The Run - Reo Speedwagon lyrics go
Heard it from a friend who, heard it from a friend who, heard it form another you were messing around.

Can You Stop the Rain - Peabo Bryson (long story behind this one for me)

Here is a site I found with a whole list of songs, one may fit for you! I also like the angry ones like You Oughta Know - Alanis Morissette and I will Survive - Gloria Gaynor

You Don't Know Me - was covered by Jann Arden in the 90s

i definitely second jeff buckley, but i would choose "lover, you should've come over" instead...seems more in line with your request of a song about unrequited love, whereas "last goodbye" is a song about realizing a love that is no more. here are the lyrics to LYSHCO:

Looking out the door
I see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations
As their shoes fill up with water

Maybe I'm too young
To keep good love from going wrong
But tonight, you're on my mind so
You never know

Broken down and hungry for your love
With no way to feed it
Where are you tonight?
Child, you know how much I need it.
Too young to hold on
And too old to just break free and run

Sometimes a man gets carried away,
When he feels like he should be having his fun
Much too blind to see the damage he's done
Sometimes a man must awake to find that, really,
He has no-one...

So I'll wait for you... And I'll burn
Will I ever see your sweet return?
Oh, will I ever learn?
Oh, Lover, you should've come over
Cause it's not too late.

Lonely is the room the bed is made
The open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one
Who dreams he had you with him
My body turns and yearns for a sleep
That won't ever come
It's never over,
My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over,
all my riches for her smiles when I slept so soft against her...
It's never over,
All my blood for the sweetness of her laughter...
It's never over,
She's a tear that hangs inside my soul forever...

But maybe I'm just too young to keep good love
From going wrong
Oh... lover you should've come over...

Yes, and I feel too young to hold on
I'm much too old to break free and run
Too deaf, dumb, and blind
To see the damage I've done
Sweet lover, you should've come over
Oh, love, well I'll wait for you
Lover, you should've come over
'Cause it's not too late.
