What do you lose by transposing?!

Question: I'd like to learn "Body and Soul" but it is in D flat. Too many flats for me, at least at my stage of development! What would I lose if I transpose it into, say, Bb?

Depending on the instrumentation, you may change some of the tonal qualities. Instruments sound different in different registers. Often this is not a big deal, it is common in jazz to transpose tunes. If a piece is very well know in a certain key, it may sound a bit odd to hear it in another.

Oh, come on! It's only 5 flats. You could transpose to Bb, but you might have a hard time getting the rest of the band to play it in that key. So, the answer is, you would likely lose your accompaniment by transposing.

You should practice what is hard for you. Transposing the changes is cool you should do that anyway but learn it in it's original key (especially if the key is hard for you), besides you're still gonna have to deal with the chords of Dflat when you transpose the tune.

As far as what you would lose, not much (some people can really hear the sound of certain keys Dflat is darker versus Bflat?) If you go to play it on a gig and you only know it in "your" key you'll probably get some bad vibes from the other players :) Of course they won't admit to not being able to transpose the tune on the bandstand, so not cool :P

Have fun great tune!

You picked a tough song to transpose mainly because as someone said some tunes are mostly heard by people in a specific key and Body and Soul is one of those tunes. However I will say that it is good to transpose songs and play them in different keys because you may find playing a song in another key sounds better for you. For instance the standard The Very Thought of You is usually played in the original key but Wynton Marsalis for one example on his Standard Time Vol 3 plays the song in a key a full tone lower than the original giving the mood of the song a more melancholy vibe.Check it out. Also listen to what John Coltrane does with the song Body and Soul on his CD Coltrane's Sound.

some pitch issues im sure and not every note will be exact

here comes me "the cheater"

in case, You decide transpose it.
