Where do I get a fiddle bridge? Should it have come with the fiddle in the first!

Question: I'm not even sure it's called that, but whatever is between the neck and the thing that anchors the strings, pretty important to the whole "sound" part of playing the fiddle. Where do I find one of these if I don't have one? And what is it called, and once I get it how the heck do I install it?

Thanks

Any violin shop will sell you a bridge for about $5 but they have to be cut to fit your violin.

The bridges as they come from the factory are way to high and too big and you cannot just slap it on your violin. It is quite a skilled business shaping the feet to fit your violin and shaping the curvature to that of your fingerboard.
It will probably cost you about $50 to have the bridge cut and fitted to your violin.

If you want to play country fiddle then tell the luthier The bridges on country music fiddles are often cut a bit flatter to make it easier to play double stops but I would not worry about this too much for now.

PS. yes, it should have come with the fiddle.

You should be able to find one at your local music store that sells violins/fiddles. They should also have a tech on hand who could show you how to put one on properly.

Yes, your fiddle should have come with one.

Unless, you are talking about the "sound post" which is located inside the body of a fiddle. Unless you can build or repair your own fiddles, you should have either a tech do this or you may even need a luthier (someone who builds/repairs them).

Your fiddle should have came with one of those, as well.

YES!!! The fiddle is useless without the bridge. It is the part that holds up the strings near the bottom. You should have it come on the fiddle, because it is hard and sometimes takes a lot of money to have someone put it on. You can go to a music instrument repair shop in your area to have this done if it does in face come without it. But you will not be able to play it until you purchase it (very expensive) and have it put on (very expensive)!

It is called the bridge. I don't know if you mean a fiddle bridge or a violin bridge... they are actually different. Since fiddlers mostly play country songs, the bridge for a fiddle is shaved down more to make it easier to play chords. The bridge for a violin is more curved because of classical technicalities. You can find bridges at your music store or on a reputable stringed instrument website like www.sharmusic.com. Installing it is a different matter... while it doesn't take a rocket scientist to install it, there are some things you have to pay attention to. But, I'll try my best. First, make sure it's facing the right direction. The lower side should be where the E string goes. Make sure it is placed perpendicular to the fingerboard directly above the soundpost (that little beam inside the violin that you can see through the f-holes). Put the strings on, but as you're tuning the strings, the bridge will start to tilt. Make sure the bridge is perfectly perpendicular to the surface of the instrument. I suggest getting someone to do it for you, but if you absolutely can't, then you can try what I just told you.

Good luck!

You can get it online, as you have found. But have a professional repair shop install it, as they need to be placed fairly precisely in order to maintain the proper intonation of the instrument.
