I have a really, really ugly voice and I want to sing.?!

Question: I'm a drummer and a guitar player, I can write music an lyrics, basically the whole package, but I have a horrendous voice. Or so i think. I'm pretty sure, trust me.

I don't want to hear "GET A VOISE TEECHER LOL" because that is NOT an option for me; my family is short on money and my mom works 8-6 6 days a week. I have six brothers and live in the middle of nowhere, so please.

I'm really into all sorts of music, besides country and pop, but I really like indie music and I would LOVE to do something like Tegan and Sarah. But I can't sing!

How can I improve my voice? And how can I find a style of music that would fit it? My voice isn't terrible to begin with, but it's definitely not singing-worthy. I don't know what to do!
Tried breathing exercises, eat a good diet, etc; please give me an answer I haven't heard before. i have looked this up on answers already. =[

1. I am sure you have a better voice than you say.
2. I think that if you practice singing you will be able to hit the notes right. Practice makes perfect.

p.s. i know what its like to want sumthing and not be able to afford it D:

just keep singing in the shower or the car or whatever. perfect your voice to your own standards. look at louis armstrong or bob dylan or tom petty. they are all awesome and widely respected but none of them have conventionally "good" voices. they all have unique voices and they all have something good to say with them too.

Okay, you might be under some misconceptions with what you've tried so far.

Breathing exercises won't really improve your voice, or not directly. What they will improve is where you breathe as well as improving the amount of air you can get in to sustain notes longer.

Diet isn't THAT important unless it's the night before or day of a performance (ex: no dairy, etc.)

What you're going to have to do if a vocal coach isn't an option is to join a chorus. Whether it's your school's or a local church, you're going to need to expose your voice to some sort of instruction. If you don't have someone who is professionally trained, it's going to be extremely difficult, if not impossible to get anywhere. A person who has been instructed in voice will be able to give you tips and suggestions as to what to do with your vocal chords to get the best sound from them as possible, and they can usually paint a good picture of what to feel or do with their words. A choral director will probably not be able to work with you one on one much, but if you get the chance before/after rehearsals, you should ask him or her for pointers.

lets be honest, you know better than anyone what your voice sounds like...if its that bad then theres nothing you can do about that. but ever heard of neil peart? one of the best rock drummers ever? yeah he wrote the lyrics for rush. find someone who can sing and create an awesome rock band.

weeeeeell the most important thing is to sing everywhere....shower, car, street, anywhere. Thats really the key. the more you "expose" your voice to singing the more "tame" it will become. the next thing...try hot honey and lemon tea. it coats the voice and opens up your vocal cords. it makes your voice sound sweet lol :] the last thing is BE CONFIDENT about your voice. just a new attitude can help a bunch
