Aww i feel horrible, can someone try to make me feel better?!

Question: okay so yesterday i went to pick up my friend to go to the mall. and i picked her up and noticed my gas tank was almost empty. so i went to put in gas in the car. The song Rag Doll by Aerosmith was playing and as i step out of the car i was going to turn off the engine and i noticed she was singing the song so i figured i'll just pay first and then when i come back turn off the car, then the song should be over(which is odd that one of my friends actually started singing the song cus none of my friends like rock at all ). then i come back, notice she’s talking on the phone. the song was still playing. and i start to fuel. as i here the song. i begin to wonder why is my radio on? and i remembered i DIDN'T TURN OFF THE ENGINE!!! i panicked and freakin jumped in the car and turned it off in the blink of a second. my friend got scared cus i did it so fast. she was like what. AND I WAS LIKE YOU COULD OF DIED!!!! i'm putting in gas and the car is ON! Then i guess she realized and sort of hanged up the phone. and i'm like i'm so sorry!!! i forgot i left the car on. and she's like its okay nothing happened, but i still feel so crummy about it. and i keep beating myself up about it. how irresponsible of me. Thank God nothing happened. but i can't help but still feel guilty. how stupid of me. and i never forget to turn off the car. its that i usually turn it off when i step foot out. but this time i left it on cus of the stupid song. and i forgot. urggh i can never forgive myself. my friend says im making a big deal of it. and that its okay and that she still trust me the same. and not to worry about it. but still i think:she could of died, i could of died, ..

Oh my goodness, just when you thought the drama was taking a break for a couple days. Looks like we have an Oscar contender for next year with MCRchick's "near death" experience. Of course, I'm glad you survived this harrowing affair, that was a close call. I know you're supposed to turn the engine off while pumping gas. However, I doubt you're alone with the countless million other survivors that have filled the tank while leaving their automobiles on. I think your friend might be correct and you no longer need to feel guilty about it. I'd be more concerned about subjecting innocent people to Aerosmith jamming out Rag Doll.

Oh yeah, I'm supposed to make you feel better. You're a survivor of a near fatal gas station disaster so approach each and every day with a renewed vigor. And all your friends of the R&P are very thankful.

At least you didn't have something like this go down!

yep

You can get gas put in the tank with the engine idling, it's no big deal. If it were a big deal, the attendant (if you live in a state with full service) would tell you to turn it off. Hasn't happened to me yet.

Listen to MORE Aerosmith.

stop beating yourself up. you made a mistake, we all make mistakes it happens! thing of it as a lesson learned because now you'll remember this situation and probably won't forget to turn your car off again! best wishes

Seriously, I have left the car running in the past. Your car will not automatically blow up because of that. You need to be a little less worried about such things. Step 1 leaving the car on, OK turn it off. But your reaction after that was an over-reaction. You need to chill a little and enjoy life.

don't be too hard on yourself.

Hey you know what. Your human. Accidents happen. Everything turned out fine.

dont worry about it
you were trying to be nice by letting her listen to the song she was singing
and you just got side-treacked and forgot you had the car on.
just step back.....take a deep breath.....and just forget about it, past is past

Okay you are definitely making a big deal out of it...I used to always pump with my car on when I first started driving and specially when i was in bad neighborhoods that way i could just leave asap.. then I later learned its best you turn off the car.. but a lot of people pump with the car on trust me.. ive never heard of anyone dying cuz of this.. you were probably annoying your friend because of the way you were acting.. just dont talk about it no more.

First of all. There are definitely some risk in leaving your motor running while pumping the gas, but for the most part this isn't a common threat. I leave my car running more than 50% of the time that I'm pumping gas. Most people dont think to cut the engine off. You are trully stressing for no reason at all. Its ok, trust me..you will forget again and nothing will happen.

Don't be so tough on yourself!!! It was an accident and no one was hurt. I've done it a few times myself.

Seriously don't beat yourself up over this. Nothing happened, so just chalk it up to you learning an important lesson. Plus it's not that likely that you will blow up if you fill with a car running, it's just a safety measure. Heck, I've seen people do that while smoking a cigarette and they didn't blow up. So don't worry so much gal. The listening to Aerosmith bit was definitely more dangerous :-D

"of course you feel that way you listen f!ck ups.....
HAHAHA
those kinds of band make you feel F!CKIN worse
cuz they suck so much B@LLS"

That was completely unnecessary and immature. Grow up.

Anyway, that's something that'd happen to me, too. Actually that has happened to me, kind of. When I was around 13 my Mom was getting gas and I turned the engine on to sort of help or out or something, and she came back and lectured me on how I could've blown up the gas station or something like that and I felt horrible, too. As a lot of other people have said, don't be too hard on yourself. Everyone makes mistakes. XP

Maybe the incident was God's way of saying, "Now that you've learned that static electricity can ignite a fuel tank, post your mishap on Yahoo! Answers. Somebody else will read your post and save lives because of it." In closing I would like to say, "THANK GOD YOU WEREN'T LISTENING TO METALLICA'S - FUEL!"

i think you are making it a big deal like your friend said. The good thing is that nothing happened, so move on with your life. You know what you did, just don't let it happened again, so you wont feel like that no more (all guilty) We easily forget about things. I sometimes forget to turn off my straightener, when i do my hair, and i leave it on all day until i come home from work, or school. But when i see that nothing happened, i didn't feel all guilty, but it would be different if something actually happened. Then thats when i wouldn't forgive myself. We just have to learn from our mistakes so it wont happened again, and we wont feel all guilty, cause i hate having that feeling.

Next time, just turn the key to "accessory." Usually it's just done by turning the key towards you from the off position, and the radio will work, but the car won't be running. :)

My dad used to fill it up with the car on all the time and he was a mechanic for a long time. Don't beat yourself up, I am sorry that you are having such a hard time with this. Just relax and listen to some awesome music.

Listen to "High Time" really loud. That'll fix ya.

Thanks for wise and cool compliment

Nothing happened so relax and chill it.
There is only a very slight risk involved, flueling with the engine running.
As a matter of fact.... the fact she was talking on her cell phone is a larger risk. Where I live it is strictly forbidden to use cell phones at gas stations.

Hello? If that's the worst thing that happened to you, you had a pretty good day. Lighten up and don't be so hard on yourself.

Your friend shouldn't have been talking on the phone while you were gassing up, I've heard a spark from your phone can set off a fire as well.

Then again -- just to take it to the level of absurdity -- while you were inside paying, an escaped rapist from prison could have jumped into your running car, stolen it with your friend inside and taken her to some dark alley etc. A run-away truck could have jumped the curb, smashed into your car with your friend inside and the entire gas station go up like a scene from the Terminator...but it didn't happen, so forgettaboutit.

I'm glad that you know to turn off your engine when you fill up.
I remember back in the 60's pulling into a gas station and the idiot attendant would be filling (you probably don't remember gas station attendants, do you?) some body's car with a lit cigarette hanging out of his mouth. Dumb!

Anyway, lighten up on yourself. This is way to long to be beating your self up about something. Ya, goofed, you corrected it, and probably have learned your lesson. You're done....next!

yeah! life suck's put on a helmet!

But It's cool,Because you didn't. Put it behind you.
Rock on man!

In Japan they always fill up while the engine is running!
And Aerosmith is her favorite band.

Aw, it's OK man. Just make a HUGE effort to never do it again.

The fact of the matter is, is that nothing bad happened. You have been extremely lucky.

My advise: Concentrate on what DID happen, rather then what COULD HAVE happened.

Its natural to feel guilt if you believe you put your friends life in danger. But try to relax, I've been driving about 20 yrs, I don't consider myself reckless, but I NEVER, EVER turn off my car when I pump. In chicago its just too cold to be turning off the heat while you freeze out there at the pump. It's not just me I see many leaving the car running at the pump. I've never seen a disaster. Not trying to be mean but you are freaking out little more than neccessary. Besides, even if pumping gas into a running car was a fatal move, you didn't do it on purpose. You were actually distracted by thoughts of accomodating her likes, not to mention you were doing her a favor by picking her up, so you must be a good friend. None of us goes thru life without making mistakes, so allow yourself a few now and then, and try not worry too much it'll just give you wrinkles ...you don't want wrinkles : )

ya want to feel better?

enjoy!

Definitely ignore the rude comments. Jerks!

You can not beat yourself up over every little thing, you know? We are imperfect beings and mistakes happen. Nothing bad happened, and all is well, fortunately :)

Mistakes are how we learn. You are pretty freaked out about it, and I bet you don't do that again. Don't beat yourself up over something like this. You and your friend are fine. Lesson learned, move on!!! No worries!!!!

Ok...BREATHE! lol. Don't beat yourself up about this because I'm going to fill you in on alittle advice. You wouldn't of killed her. The main reason you are supposed to shut your car off before fueling is to prevent air from getting sucked into the tank. I can't tell you how many times I have left my car running while pumping gas during the winter, simply because I was too cold to shut it off. Usually your 'check engine' light will come on after though (this doesn't mean there is anything wrong with your engine) but it will go off after you drive your car for a bit. I'm not saying to make a habit of getting gas while leaving the engine on, but all I'm saying is your friend didn't come close to dying lol. Don't worry!! Think about happier things...like the weekend!! :)

Tesla Girl is right. In fact, cops usually leave their cars running while they are getting gas.

of course you feel that way you listen f!ck ups.....
HAHAHA
those kinds of band make you feel F!CKIN worse
cuz they suck so much B@LLS

maybe this will help....i would choose living in a clogged toilet for all eternity, than listen to 2 minutes of MCR.
