Seriously. Or even to some of the other greats ( or rather, semi-greats compared to Johnny Cash ) like Willie Nelson, Randy Travis, or Waylon Jennings? Or heck, even Dolly Parton?

What happened to country music? Simple. Nashville record companies are run by people who grew up on rock and roll and think that anything that comes out of the south is "country." That's how Lynyrd Skynyrd suddenly became a "country band" after 35 years of being nothing but a rock and roll band.
They also see nothing but dollar signs: if they can't package it and sell five million copies, they don't want anything to do with it. The funny thing is, Richard Weize started Bear Family Records in Germany to reissue the country music that Nashville record companies refused to reissue on the pretense that "nobody wants to hear that old stuff," and he's made quite a profitable business for himself by doing so.
I'm not saying he is at Johnny Cash status, but he is as good as other legends, Hank Williams III
its became pop...there are some great singers though..i tend to like the modern stuff mixed with some of the old..i love hank williams jr ..the old stuff..miranda lambert..and little big town..dierks bentley and josh turner..he reminds me of some of the older stuff
Josh Turner has the most sexy voice! - but I don't think you can compete with the classics. The only reason I can think of is simply that music and "taste" has evolved.
I'd have to say Gary Allen has a good voice and is a very good perfomer, also Josh Turner is going to be great i bet
