Who is the best modern guitarist in rock and i want to know WHY!!?!

coming from a guitarist that has been playing for 18 years myself i ave to say its not about what someone can do with a guitar its more about the feeling and presence of what they are playing, you can play a thousand notes by trilling, finger tapping or hammering the **** out of the guitar but its the ones that put the most emotion into their work that make them good, thats why Zakk Wylde gets my vote, most of all for the solo on Ozzy Osbournes No More Tears, feel the noise on that **** people

Well if you REALLY mean modern (there are too many older guitarist I can metion) then I say John Petrucci of Dream Theater. He has both skills and emotion when he plays.

While I agree that Slash, Kirk Hammet and Brian May are bloody fantastic, I have to give my nod to Steve Vai. What that man can't do with a guitar ain't worth doing!

Wow i look at all the answers and no one has mentioned Dimebag Darrell. The reason why dime is the best modern guitarist is because even though he has passed on his legacy still remains in the world of metal/rock. He is one of my biggest influences along with millions of other guitarists.

Brian may is a god! some of the sounds he gets from an antique fireplace and bits him and his dad found the house is incredible. especially on some of the lesser know album tracks
will give a nod to roger taylor known mainly for bein an awesome drummer but listen to some of his solo work and the guitar playin on there is top quality
