Jim Morrison?!

Question: I haven't played the Doors in a long time and I was just listening to the lyrics. Wow compared to the stuff you hear today where many pop artist don't write their own lyrics and they're so tame. Where the heck did he come up with this stuff? Poet on drugs on the edge of madness is what comes to mine. Pure genius.

I think that Jim's intelligence was highly overlooked. To me it seems like because of his looks people never really took him seriously, especially in his poetry. Do you know the song Horse Latitudes by The Doors? (it is on the CD Strange Days) Here are the lyrics: http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/H... Jim wrote that song when he was about 15 years old. Jim was a brilliant poet, but during his lifetime he never really got his recognition. Why is he such a great poet? I really can not give you a definite answer on this because I am not Jim, and even so he may not be able to give you an answer. I would say his poetry and words are so great because of his personality and how he lived his life. Jim was one of those people who lived for us, who did things that we would be too afraid to do, but then we would stab him in the back and complain about how he lived. Partially, Jim was never really accepted for who he was, and some people loved him for being himself, but others chose to dislike him for doing the very thing that they wanted him to do. Jim also lived an interesting life, being in a high social status, so he was experiencing things that most average people can not. Concerning the drugs, I think that Jim took them with the idea or purpose to reach an elevated state of mind, which as you mentioned is not the reason that the celebrities of today do. Really, I think that he came up from things, as he would say, "just floating in my mind". I think that these floating things are stored memories and thoughts, from books and personal experience to songs that he had heard. Jim was just a poetic genius for a multiple of reasons I guess. My favorite lyric: Dead president's corpse in the driver's car, the engine runs on glue and tar, come along not going very far, to the East to meet the czar. (from Not To Touch The Earth) By the way, it is cool that you are listening to The Doors again, and you realize how great things are.
