Scales, scales, scales!.!.!.

Ha! Scales will only go so far! Yes, they are ABSOLUTELY important, but useless if you don't know how to use them!

The biggest part about playing jazz (and many people seem to forget this) is LISTENING! As a piano player, you not only need to know how to do improv, but comp as well! You have to do this without getting in the way of the soloist or other rhythm section members!.!.!. and when YOU get the solo, many times, you are still comping for yourself!

To learn to improv (and this will help your composition skills as well), just pick a few great pianists and LISTEN!. Try to imitate- not just notes, but rythms, placement of notes!.!.!. is it behind the beat!?!.!.!. listen to the phrasing!.!.!. is it like a wall of sound!?!.!.!.Is it sparse!? Does it sound like a horn player should be playing it, or does it flow naturally on the piano!?

If you have the patience for it, try to sit and transcribe a solo from one of your favorite performers (I love Monk, but I would start with something a little less complex)!.

THIS is what jazz is all about!.!.!. listening and building off each other to create something new!.!.!. it's sharing ideas and talking through music!.!.!.

Don't get me wrong- you should still learn those scales (blues, pentatonics, modes!), but without style, they don't amount to much!

Good Luck! :)

Oh- some recomended listening for a range of jazz piano:
Herbie Hancock (does modern stuff too!), Dave Brubeck (also a composer), Bill Evans, Teddy Wilson, Art Tatum, Thelonius Monk, Ahmad Jamal, Joe McBride, Duke Ellington, Bud Powell, Chick Corea!.!.!. the list is infinite, but this gives you a wide variety! HAVE FUN!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Jazz improv is ablsolutley not just grabbing notes!. There are many different ways to do this but I'll give you the two basic ones!. You may want to get in some formal lessons, though, if you want to preform these quicker and more precise:

1!.) Most improv is based on the chords in the base!. So basically if you are playing a C major chord, C major chord notes: (C, E, G,) Will sound great!.
2!.) Using different jazz blue scales (which can be found on the internet,) you can play entire scales, (mostly 8-note groups,) and you will sound spectacular! Example: Blues Scale: C Eflat F Gflat G Bflat and C!. Remember if this doesn't make sense, private lessons are the key to your success when going into music!. Keep plying, and Good Luck!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Start simple!. If you are playing in the key of C Major, use the notes of the C Major Pentatonic Scale (C, D, E, G, A)!.

Focus on just those notes for now (until you feel comfortable to take on more scales or other keys)!.

Play those notes over standard progressions (I, IV, V), (I, VI, II, V, I)!.

If you play something that sounds wrong, play it again without breaking tempo!. Repetitive phrasing can work very well!.

As for timing, mix it up!. You can develop coordination in your fingers by playing the bass note like a metronome in your left hand, while letting your right hand take the melody and experiment with timing!.

Listen to the masters play and keep on practicing!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Hi! there!.
I love the answer gave by lady prism!.!.

let me add someting my self!.
there are several pianist helping in the net!.(good ones)

Rob Mullins (one of the masters alive) Rob has several books about piano jazz
http://www!.planetmullins!.com/

Mrs!. Yoke Wong (outstanding )
http://www!.jazzpianotips!.com/

Mark Levine!.
has two books
the jazz piano book and the jazz theory book!.(don't live without them)

and one final word from me !.
turn on the recorder ,seat at the piano and play blue scale chords progression with the right hand and the bass with the left hand!.

now!. play it back from the recorder!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

jazz improvisation is just basically grabbing a note anywhere, unless your a fast thinker who knows every mode, super-mode, and symmetrical scale possible, which is more likely for a good jazz musician!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
