With most record deals the label need evidence that the product your behind can sell!. Sending them just a demo is not enough for a label to invest ￡0!.5m into releasing an album with you!. They need to be sure they're onto a winner!.
Start by building a fan base, sites like myspace can show a label that you get a lot on interest in people listening to your music, but obviously that's not enought these days!.
You need to generate a buzz about you!. Do as many gigs as possible, get your name on the live scene and if you are good people will talk about you!. A&R are about and talk to other gig goers and could pick up on your name and be interested!.
It's up to you to get it snow balling from there!. But the myth of sending a demo and getting a deal are long gone, especially with a possible resession looming!. Finally put your money where your mouth is!.!.!.!.if you can invest a few hundred quid in your self, record a decent EP, make a few thousand of these and if you can sell them then you know a label should be taking notice!.
