I think people missed the point of the song because they don't pay attention to politics!. The Republican Party is not normally associated with Black people, since so many of us vote Democrat!. Republicans are also more likely to be viewed as wealthy because so many of them either come from or support big business, as opposed to the common man!. A Black Republican gets hated on from both sides!. The party you joined hates on you because they typically ain't too fond of Black people!. Your own people hate on you because you went Republican instead of Democrat!. A Black person who votes Republican is typically viewed as a sellout by other Black people!.
The song is talking about the jealousy, envy, venom you get from the people who are supposedly the closest to you whenever you reach that level they haven't reached yet, when you're able to do the things they aren't doing!. A lot of people miss the "Reasonable Doubt" Jay-Z and the "Illmatic" Nas, but neither one of them were doing as well back then as they are now!. It's like people like you better when you're still in the streets, hustling and hungry like they are!. It gets to be like "I'm damned if I do; I'm damned if I don't!." It was probably intended to be one of the most important tracks on the album, but it's one of the weaker songs!. He definitely should have had a better producer than Green Lantern do the track, and his lyrics also could have been better considering what the song was supposed to be!.
