I love that song!. It's very deep and meaningful, especially if you've had addiction impact your life in some way!.
I am a recovering alcoholic, and I feel that this song speaks to me in a very direct sense, even though Sam's addiction wasn't (necessarily) alcohol!.
He made a great DVD, it's him live !.!.!.!. somewhere!. Danged if I remember what the title was, but if you have the chance, give it a watch!. I liked the fact that a lot of his material is more folk than "new country"!. It seems more honest that way!.
