This song was written in 1912 -- *way* before the Civil Rights movement, political correctness, and all that jazz!. At that time, the term "darkies" was a reference to African-American people!. It's considered an ethnic slur today!. If you've ever heard Swanee River (Old Folks At Home) written by Stephen Foster around 1850, the chorus uses that term also!.!.!.
All the world is sad and dreary,
Everywhere I roam,
Oh! darkies how my heart grows weary,
Far from the old folks at home
