What is the song "Hallelujah" [by Rufus Wainwright] about?!

Question: What is the song "Hallelujah" [by Rufus Wainwright] about!?
I, for the most part, understand what most songs are about!. But this one just baffles me!. =P My cousin said she thinks it's about Mary Magdalen, but isn't sure!.

These are the lyrics: I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you!?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Mabye I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
There was a time
You let me know
What's real and going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you!?
And remember when I moved in you!?
The holy dark was moving to
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
Maybe there's a god above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
And it's not a cry you can hear at night,
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's cold and it's a broken HallelujahWww@Enter-QA@Com

In general!? It's a love song!. Only it's a realistic love song!. Not everything is always perfect in love; it can hurt!.

He draws on a lot of religious stories in the Bible highlighting on the sins of the characters and what they did (or suffered) for love!.

also, Leonard Cohen wrote it--FYI!. And Jeff Buckley covered it!. And then Rufus Wainwright!. Both of the covers are beautiful, but Buckley's is!.!.!.absolutely breathtaking!. So much emotion in it--definitely give it a listen if you haven't!.

Great song and great question! Brandi Carlile has a version of it too!. You can listen to her interpretation of the song in the link below!. She's not a religious singer, but there's some Old Testament imagery there!.

It references the story of King David ("a man after [God's] own heart" according to the OT) who was so overcome with love and lust that he nearly lost everything good about himself!.

The story goes something like this: David saw Bathsheba bathing from his balcony and fell powerfully in love with her!. When he found out she was married, he had her husband drafted as a soldier and sent to the front lines (to face certain death)!. Then he took her as a wife (he had many wives, of course - it's good to be the king), and she became his favorite wife!. Finally one day, a prophet who advised the king came to him and called him out on what a selfish, evil thing he had done!. David knew he was right, and sought forgiveness!.

To me the song is about our idea of love!. The singer is saying that love isn't a celebration of wonderfulness!. It also hurts like hell!. Sure, it has its good times (and ohhhh they're so good), but it also comes at a very high price!. So be thankful for knowing love in your life, but if you're shouting "hallelujah" from the hilltops, then you haven't truly learned to understand love yet at all!. When you're truly enlightened in the ways of love (for your lover, your family, your God, total strangers, your enemies, whomever) you've been beaten down and spit on and frozen out and left for dead enough to still feel the sting of love despite its joy!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

King David had an affair and Bathsheba!. He saw her bathing and took her into his bed, even though they were both married!. Bathsheba ended up pregnant so David had to send her husband to war on the front lines so that he would be killed!.

also the part about cutting hair reminds me of Samson and Delilah!. She cut off his hair, which was the source of his strength!. He was the strongest man in the world!.

It seems this song is about a woman being man's downfall!.
