INDONESIAN authorities issued a tsunami warning for the eastern province of North Maluku after a 6.6-magnitude quake hit the area but withdrew it shortly afterwards.

The earthquake was centred 57km under the seabed, about 230km northwest of the town of Ternate, the capital of North Maluku, a Meteorology Bureau official said.

"Judging from the magnitude, there is a potential that a tsunami might develop," he told AFP.

The US National Weather Service said there was no threat of a destructive, widespread tsunami after the quake and Indonesian authorities called off the alert.

The US Geological Survey put the quake at magnitude 7.4 and said the epicentre was 88km deep.

The Associated Press said the earthquake sent panicked residents fleeing from buildings.
