You are probably not going to be able to believe this answer...

No one was allowed to wear blue jeans. They were a relatively new fashion trend for the younger set (having been worn by only workers previously), and the school administrations decided that they weren't suitable for school.

Boys had to wear slacks and button up shirts. In colder weather they were allowed to wear sweaters. There were no such things a just T shirts allowed inside -- they had to be covered up by shirts or sweaters. And if you wore a shirt, it had to be done up all the way and closed by some sort of tie. Bow ties were popular with the smart boys then.

And gym shoes were for gym alone. Proper leather shoes had to be worn to classes. Ever hear of Penny Loafers, or Saddle shoes? These were big for both guys and girls when I was in high school.

As to girl's fashions--either a skirt and blouse, or a dress had to be worn. The shortest length allowed was right across the kneecaps. Most girls wore stockings held up by garter belts. (With our monthly pads held by something similar--but never mind that!) Panty hose only became an "in" style in my last year of school -- and they were torture to put on..not much natural stretch in them, so you ended up ruining more of them trying to get them on, then otherwise. In grade 11, fishnet stockings actually became popular, and wonder of wonders!! they were easy to put on and stretched well to fit almost everyone.

Girls were not allowed to wear any sort of pant, or pant like product to school...no slacks, no pedal pushers, no bermuda shorts, no jeans. Although the majority of us owned these, and would change into them as soon as we got home from school.

And our gym clothes were ROMPERS made out of non-stretchy cotton. They had shorts that ended at the top of the thigh and had elastic cuffs so that they would fit close, and we all looked like we were wearing DIAPERS.

It wasn't until the YEAR AFTER I graduated from high school that girls were allowed to wear slacks to school. And a couple of years after that, everyone was wearing jeans.

You have NO IDEA just how lucky you are, to be living now instead of then!
