It would be convenient. However then the government would be forced to tax on multiples of 5.
If your state's sales tax was say... 8.75% (NY), they would more than likely raise it to 10% instead of lowering it to 5%.
I say keep the penny and there won't be any problems.
I would be happy until i was buying something, that required a penny. But, i wouldn't miss pennies.
There was actually an old man in his late 60's in my home town who bought a brand new truck with rolled pennies he had been saving for the last 25 yrs. He actually filled his truck up with boxes of rolled pennies and took them to the ford dealer and they said he would have to go to the bank and have them transfer it into cash. Well he went across the street to the Pontiac dealer and they had their mechanics, sales men, and secretaries all out there counting the rolled pennies and he left in a brand new 1999 Pontiac!!!! It was in the papers and in the news! Can u imagine? it sure made FORD look bad!!!!

Keep collecting them and still turn them in for cash. It's amazing how quickly the little suckers add up in a jar.
I turned in well over $100.00 in pennies from a half full Sparkletts jug 2 yrs ago and have another filling now.

Theyshould they area waste of space take up far too much room in your purse and they would be a nightmare to change in the bank.
I like pennies because I want all my change back. I don't want to have to pay a penny more for something than I have to. Everything is already expensive, I don't like rounding off, it's always rounded higher!!
They are fantastic for weighing down that jar on my dresser.
It wouldn't bug me in the least if they did away with them. Even if that meant prices being rounded up. You can't use them in any vending machines, and the gas station kid looks like he wants to choke me if I pay using more than five pennies at a time.
But then again, they DO make my kids happy when they get a few.
How long after that though would it take for them to become collectors' items?
100 make a dollar
1000 make ten dollars
10,000 make 100 dollars
100,000 make 1000 dollars

so if you save 100 pennies a day it will add up to
36,500 pennies a year no save that for say ten years
and you will have $3,650 dollars........

cash them in before they do.............................If someone has really annoyed me like the electric company or phone or whatever company I will pay my whole bill in change....and there is nothing they can do about it because it is US currency.....I love it
