Americans do NOT call pants shorts. There are short pants. Which is another word for shorts. But all pants are not shorts.

I thought they called pants 'underpants'? For our transatlantic viewers who see my answer. Only men wear underpants in the UK, women wear pants or knickers.
I call them mediums, because one cannot buy anything NEW that doesn't come down halfway down one's
