No-need to cut the apron strings. Have 5 sons (4 adults) and they all survived and have actually done quite well. Kids need SOME independence here & there.
I walk them to the playground of the school ,they line up and their teachers walk them in. School rules only walk them to the cafeteria in Pre K and K.
i took my daughter to kindergarten every day, after that always on the first day of school, i will stop when it no longer seems necessary, probably second year of Jr high and on.
It depends on the child. But I would think that 5 or older is too old. After the initial meet & greet with the teacher and the occasional stop to say hello- I say don't do it!
