There are 2 types : Category 1 is where you are told something within the strict rules of confidentiality. Say, someone confesses a dark secret to you on condition you don't pass it on to others. If you accept the rules you are morally bound to keep your word.
Sometimes we regret accepting the rules
because other innocent parties might suffer as a result.It's then a matter of conscience as to whether the gravity of the situation
warrants breaking our vow of confidentiality.
What we must avoid is someone BURDENING us with his or her guilty
secret - using us as an emotional bucket to obtain a measure of relief and virtually blackmailing us into silence. That sort of moral dilemma is not uncommon and of course mustn't be tolerated.
Category 2 is "implied secrecy" where we "come by" information which would generally be regarded as confidential but without us being sworn to secrecy. Most common type of situation would be,say,
discovering wife A of our best friend B is having an affair with C. Here it's a question
of loyalty to B as against dishing the dirt on A and C.If the solids hit the air-conditioning how do we explain to B that we knew of the dark secret but remained silent?
Tough one - there are no rules to follow as such, we are not 'honour-bound' to remain silent but revelation might make a bad situation worse.It's more a matter of judgement than conscience.
