try the "oh well we can't go out for that treat i was planning now because i dont have my keys- we'll just have to sit here and be bored" works everytime with my son ( hes 4 too)

My experience has shown that he could perhaps have dug a hole in the garden and buried them (this actually happened!).
Try under bed, in drawers, near teddy bears (you might find it was actually one of the bears who did it, not your 4 year old!).

Litter bin. Under a chair or sofa cushion. In his toy box or in one of his toys.

My remote was missing for 2 weeks when my son pulled it out from inside the couch coushin where he unzipped it, put it in and zipped it back up and forgot about it.
My usual hiding place when I hid things was:
back on the sofa
bin
fridge
and tubmle dryer.
In a toy truck or he has flushed them down the loo....lol

I know what you mean, they are great at hiding things. A few of my belongings have been found in hard-to-find places like, in cushion covers, tissue boxes, game boxes I could go on all night..
