Why Is Liking fantasy/sci-fi Seen as "Nerdy"?!

Question: You know. Stuff like Lord of the Rings. Fanasty pc games, Dungeons & Dragons, Star Trek, etc..

I get the impression that no one *really* knows why. Just that those things are satirized in the media & it's come to the point where poking fun at it is the norm.

But why/when did that begin?

Is it because maybe that sort of thing requires a bit more thinking?

People who're into those things don't always fit the image:

Truth is, people of all walks of life & social circles like those things & most don't come close to looking like the dude above.

So what gives?

Persons do not want to take the time to investigate Sci Fi and other type of role playing games and such are in my estimation are cheating themselves. Anything that doesn't "fit' what they think is the "norm" they will throw fun at it. If you are not a jock or whatever, I guess they feel you are wasting your time. I've been involved in Sci Fi & role playing games since the mid 70's and continue to this day.
I've been bitten by a new bug, over the last 2 years I have now taken up Warhammer 40,000- and I'am again facing the wrath of my co-workers and other friends. Who cares!! I do what I want and I suggest that you follow your own path and express yourself to your liking, not to thier short sighted judgments. I am 41 years old, and I plan to keep going with my own choices until I meet my maker.!

I love all those Sci Fi things and I don't care if anyone else considers me nerdy - it probably began because it was different that what others were doing and different in our society is very hard to accept.

Life is too short to take yourself too seriously and sci fi and fantasy is just fun! :)

It's seen as nerdy because not everyone watches it and if you're not like everyone else, and you're not acting like a robot, then you're considered a "loser".

I think you should do what you want and no one can stop you.

i dont like it but my son`s do it isnt nerdi who told you that, mainly men that watch it but men dont grow up,but let them enjoy it

I don't think it's "nerdy". I like sci-fi/fantasy stuff, and I don't look like that guy in the picture.

A few years ago, I was reading a sci fi magazine in class and a few of my rather (umm... how can I say this kindly?) intellectually challenged classmates took the liberty of making a joke out of it. I was generally seen as a bit of a misfit before, but the fact that I was into SF was just fuel in the fire. It didn't really bother me, to be honest. I was hellbent on being different to the rest of my slack jawed peers, and to some extent, I still am. I'm proud to call myself a nerd. ^_^

Going back to the social misfit thing, I've got friends who are into gaming, D&D, anime, sci fi and computers in a huge way, but are "normal" in every other way you could think of. I have one friend who is utterly obsessive about games and anime, but is also into free running and is on our school's rugby team. On the other end of the spectrum, I've got another one who refuses to talk about anything other than Harry Potter, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy VII and fan fiction, (even to non fans) and has alienated herself from most other kids her age. The only people she's friends with are other nerds. I mean, she's my friend and I lover her to death, but it's people like her that create that stigma.

Honestly Fonz I think the documentary "Trekkie" the old one from the 1970's had a lot to do with starting the whole sci fi "Nerd" stereotype. Personally I could give a ---- I'm a a huge fan of Star Wars Stark Trek LOTR and lots of other stuff like that. Hell I got a dragon tattoed down one arm. See i love breaking stereotypes and going against the grain. Always have. I'm 6 foot even 194 lbs I'd love to see somebody call Me a Sci Fi Nerd. The only thing I fit the image of is a dumb redneck. And a redneck I am, dumb, anything but.
