I'm a hotel receptionist, I deal with foreign tourists all day long. I have discovered that the easiest way to avoid frustration from both parties is to give them a pen and some paper and they will draw you a little picture, or play charades. Either way, you both have a good laugh once you've figured out that they only wanted some more milk.

i don't really further my speech if they don't understand me. if they don't speak english, changing the tone won't make them understand any better. it only works if they understand a little. body language helps.
be careful of signging language, "bathroom" in american is "i wanna have sex" in japanese signing.
lol, i had a few of these at work today, i sell food at a themepark.
i found dramatic gestures often transend language barriers, for example what drink would you like? pretend to be drinking then shrug...

You should yell at them. If that doesnt work push them over.

Take a dictionary where it has there language and your language in it together most news agency should have them if not they may refer you to a place that sells them.
I try to modify my speech! If he suffers from severe "hearing loss", I scream ! LOL!!
Write it down and show it to him. Or speak in mono syllables.

Modify, use hand signals (polite ones, not the rude sort). Acting things out works the best. I speak a tiny bit of a few languages, sometimes we can figure it out. For some reason people always ask me directions etc....so I am used to it by now.
