ABOUT THE SAME
Unfortunately it'll probably be a little bit less for me.
Same as last year. Five hundred bucks. My daughter does my shopping for me because I hate malls. I'm done for the year.
I will spend about the same amount on each person but have a new granddaughter this year so one more to buy for.
More, only because we have a daughter now. I just refuse to spend more than $10 per person. I don't get into the greed and materialism of Xmas. I celebrate Christmas. I make sure my gifts are meaningful, not the trend of the second that will be over by New Year's Day. For our parents, my husband and I got photo collages of us and our daughter, our first born. They were $10 each. We're framing them, so it will be closer to $15 each. My sister is getting a smaller family portrait and I'll probably find something for her daughter. For my 22-y-o SIL who has more than everything, it seems, I want to donate some money in her name to a children's charity. For my brother and his family, I may not do anything, due to distance. If I do, I'll just send my brother some cash for the kids for things they need.
Looking back, I don't always remember what I received for Christmas. (I remember when I got my Cabbage Patch Kid, a desk for my room [that I'm using now 14 years later], an old Walkman with a tape player and maybe a few other things.) What I do remember are the times my family and I spent together. Opening one or two gifts on Christmas Eve after church. Waiting until after church on Christmas Day to open Christmas and munching on cookies from church members (my father's a pastor) and my mother's Chex Mix. We took turns opening a gift at a time and we had to open it at the tape so my mom could reuse the paper. (Something that I still do today. I even did it at my baby shower and it even irritated my mom.) I remember decorating the tree with our eclectic ornaments, all of which have meaning. I still enjoy the candlelight Christmas Eve services. I don't like that not many churches even have Christmas morning services, as those were also wonderful. (I went to church a couple of years ago when Christmas was on Sunday. I left my husband and his family at his parents' house so they could spend their annual 15 minutes ripping into presents while I more or less did one of my family traditions. Last Christmas, the church we were at did have a Christmas morning service.) Those are the things I want to pass on to my child[ren].
