I love a black suit...with a great pair of red shoes!!!!!!! Or red boots...I mean a pant suit..I just think it looks classy!
Black dress is always a good choice, but since it is Christmas, you could liven things up with black slacks and a red sweater.
I would go dressy-casual. Something like black dress pants or a black skirt (with nylons) and a pretty top or sweater. Early evening does not require a black suit or 'formal' black dress. Just something nice looking and festive (although I would highly avoid the 'ugly' Christmas sweater' idea!!) Something like a gold twinset or v-neck burgandy sweater would be nice. And wear some pretty jewelry and nice shoes (think low-heels) and you should be right in style.
wear something comfortable, but sexy.
