Does the word niggardly bother you? I use it as a synonym for being cheap or sti!

Question: work and got some negative feedback...I just replied what it meant (I cut and pasted a definition) but someone just replied back that they are still offended...knowing how things work these days I am standing by to hear from the PC police here at work.

Ignorant people are easily offended.

None are so blind as those who will not see.

Don't dumb yourself down.

yeah, that's really not a good word to use dumbass.

NOT A GOOD WORD!!

i know what it means but it still doesnt sound nice or politically correct

just because you made it into a adverb does not mean you can use it.

i think i was smarter not knowing that word.

Yeah, ur not too smart.

you really do have a Steel Head don't you

The Feds ruled that it wasn't an appropriate word for the political office place.

It's archaic.

If someone said to me at work: "Let's go kick around some faggots and burn them." I'd have them arrested, fired, and sued!

By the way I know many Norwegians, and they don't think it's a word you should use in English either.

sounds like you're testing your boundaries. i wouldn't have done that at work unless i wanted to start trouble.

Since it is not a commonly used word anymore people probably think (and rightly so in my opinion) that you were just trying to present for effect.

It doesn't bother me, I know the difference.

Kevin likes AC Milan says: "just because you made it into a adverb does not mean you can use it."

niggardly is an actual word, you dumb****

It is a legitimate word, but I personally wouldn't use it in this day and age just because everyone is so quick to take offense. If Santa can't say "ho, ho, ho" anymore (see headlines today!), I sure don't expect someone with a typical public school education to be able to distinguish that word from the other prohibited "N" word!

It doesn't bother me at ALL. Its correct usage is exactly what you stated, being cheap. Just because it is spelled similarly to the offensive N word, it doesn't mean it has anything to do with it.

What bothers me is people who get offended over a harmless word of which they're obviously ignorant.

No, it doesn't bother me --- because I know the definition, which you are absolutely correct in, too.

The people who "had a problem" with your using it should read the dictionary, and lower their head in shame of being that ignorant, or be happy they learned a new word!
.

I understand the definition of it but you were really walking a thin line of being offensive. If you recognize that the word is the synonym for cheap or stingy, why not use those words? Niggardly isn't even commonly used in standard everyday language. It sounds like you were just trying to see if you could get away with using the N word without ACTUALLY using the N word. To do it at work was just lack of taste. Use your common sense. You know what it sounds like, regardless of what Webster's says it means. Start looking up the origin of words before you give them a spin for the first time. If you did it just to be a smart a** then you deserve to get in trouble but if you sincerely didn't mean it in that way, good luck because you are going to have to deal with these lack of judgment mistake for awhile. Good luck.
