"its not quite a mop its not quite a puppet but man, hahahahaha, so to answer your question i have no idea." Homer Simpson's definition of a muppet. muppets are puppets like kermit the frog. it is also used as slang for an idiot or a clumsy person. basically, if someone cocks-up there called a muppet.

it's a way of telling someone that they've done or said something daft... for instance, i call my son a Muppet if he gets his shoes on the wrong feet, or something silly like that... usually the term 'Muppet' isn't meant to be a serious insult.. it's more like saying 'u daft sod' rather than a major insult. i don't mind being called a Muppet anyway, i like all things connected to Jim Henson (as u can see by my avatar !)

A muppet is a combination marionette and puppet. Put it all together and you get a muppet. For example, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy are both muppets. They are not just puppets, or marionettes.
Puppets are controlled internally (like Lambchop or a sock puppet) and marrionettes are controlled externally, whether by strings from above or wires from below.
When looking at muppets, like Kermit, if you look closely enough, you can see wires attached to his arms from below, but his mouth is controlled by someone's hand inside. That's a muppet!

Some one who cannot think for themselves, therefore needing some one else to do it for them.
The word 'muppet' is a mix of ;marionette and puppet, both of which need an outside influence to control them.

I am.

It's time to play the music
It's time to light the lights

It's like a kind of torture
To have to watch the show

And now let's get things started
Why don't you get things started
It's time to get things started
On the most sensational inspirational celebrational Muppetational
This is what we call the Muppet Show!

(Gonzo blows his trumpet)

mmm - reference to the muppet show, where fun, clowning about and general humour was the order of the day.Nice insult or compliment depending how ya look at it, meaning you're a laugh and a bit of a cartoon muppet chacter.

The word itself is a conflation of marionette and puppet and the the title of The Muppet Show came about as a result of this conflation. It was generally thought that the muppets, whilst seemingly larger than life, were also rather shallow foolish creatures. This was extended to humans who might be described in this way - at least in the eyes of those who wished to insult them.
