Some people have no sense of humor. It helps if they know you are a joker though first before trying to pull a stranger's leg.
I used to call up friends or friends of friends and pretend to be from the IRS wanting to talk to them about past year's tax returns. I'd let them sweat for about 15 seconds and then die laughing. Those who knew me as a jokester laughed with me. A couple who barely knew me got absolutely IRATE and griped about me bitterly for months which was totally uncalled for because I didn't string them along for but a few seconds. But these were attorneys. Oh Gee! Do some attorneys take everything a bit too seriously?
So it just helps to know your audience before you go pulling their leg. But yes, I would have immediately suspected you were joking...or truly insane! (HA!)
