The Dead were not all that talented. They developed this cult following and that was it.
The Byrds had TALENT! Great arrangements and great songs. OH, and that 12 string guitar!

I dont think the Dead can be classified into any subtype of music.
And I'm not being insulting, it's just that it takes a special person to enjoy The Dead.
The Dead, only because they produced so much more music, and Terrapin Station is a real work of art.
