I broke the middle toe on my right foot about 15 years ago. Broke it by stumbling, barefoot, in to the kitchen one morning, still half-asleep. Metal chair leg, my toe; the chair leg won. My toe turned a lovely shade of black and swelled up spectacularly. No cast, but tightly wrapped. It hurt like a bastard; couldn't walk for a week. Took forever to heal -- about a year and a half before the pain and tenderness went away completely.
