This can't be right?!

Question: i have a toohache, rang the dentist yesterday and the recepionist said could not be seen till next wednesday, unless they get a cancellation, now this is private not medical card, should i really have to keep taking painkillers from now till next wednesday, it just does not make sence.. ok i know i'm going to get answers saying go else where, but i like this practice, like if you were very ill you would go to A&E. why can't it be similar for a dentist when you are in pain...best answer gets 10.

I was told to wait 10 weeks when I rang my dentist because of severe pain. 10 weeks! I rang my local hospital & they have an emergancy dentist, he saw me that day. The dental service in the UK is an absolute joke.

because of the way dentist are people are using A&E,
if your in pain they can not refuse you help

my sister did it 5 weeks ago when she broke a tooth.
they told her to go to the dentist she told them she had tried ever dentist going

You can still go to A&E for dental pain. I took my husband there once in the middle of the night when he had an abcess, they gave him antibiotics and painkillers and told him to make an appointment with his dentist.

They should operate an emergency service for use out of hours, most private and NHS dentists do this. It might mean that you have to go to an alternative location for treatment but surely that is better than dealing with the pain for a week.

Believe it or not, your situation is what most people go through when seeking instant medical/dental care.

My guess is that most professionals are on overload these days, thanks to the many cases out there of people suffering the hardships of wars, diseases, malnutrition, over eating and environmental hazards.

Quality care is so necessary in these times, and all we get are gimmicks that require high co payments and still don't get us connected immediately to a quality professional.

All I can suggest is to do what I do...keep a vigilance on your personal hygiene and until you get the needed dental attention, try using that over the counter medication that gets the area infected numb.

Ask your local pharmacist...they'll know what I mean.

Like it or not, the insurance companies are out to make money and don't care about people. Many professionals are booked way ahead of time or overbooked to keep the money coming in. It's not right but you should be talking to the government that made and changed all the rules and not for the benefit of the people.
I was coughing up blood while I was getting an echocardiogram of my heart done. It kept getting worse and I saw my PCP afterward and he gave me the script for the chest Xray. I called the hospital I use to set up the chest Xray and they were booked for 2 months! Another hospital that I called , told me to come in and then told me that unless I paid for my portion of Medicare which is a lot, they can't do it. My last resort was a Diagnostic Center that I had been to before and they finally took pity on me and took the chest Xray without an appointment.
Some dentists do give a number in case of emergencies..but chances are it will be someplace else you don't know and then you better pray they don't pull the tooth.
Whether it is private or not.....it is still medical insurance just the same. All of us should be treated the same. I have been where you have been and it is awful. I had to take pain killers too and I wound up in the ER because they interfered with another med and they don't know which one. Insist on an emergency number. Your dentist certainly has a cell phone for emergencies or at least a referral. Best of luck as I know the pain all too well. Unfortunately the ER does nothing for you except to say :"See your dentist". A flawed system we have.. but better than most countries.

Where are you from?

In Glasgow, Scotland we have a Dental Hospital that you go to if you have problems like that.

You can have temporary work done to stop the pain until you get to your normal dentist

I know how you are feeling toothache is the worst pain EVER you can not think of anything else

I hope you get it fixed real soon.... ;0

I'm sorry I know my answer won't really help.I just wanted to say,I get pretty annoyed with some British doctors. It seems all they can do just to give you painkillers,I think it's disgusting.I refuse to be on tablets for a week. Why they don't want to try to find a cause of the problem?I go with cough, they say take paracetamol,i go there with bad back...take ibuprofen, fever...panadol etc.Are they just to busy to get a blood sample, or at least to have a look at people....?
Hope you feel better soon.

Why don't you just go and sit in cause someone is bound to forget there appointment.
