The monster is honesty and once we become totally honest with all aspects of of our lives that's when we will know peace

I think this passage is Mr. Selby's explanation of man's constant battle between good and evil.
maybe it means, when we look at our worst flaws about ourselves, we then have the power to acknowledge them and change them for the better.
it means humanity has something inherently evil within. Religion calls it 'original sin', whatever it is, it is expremely distructive. Acknowledging it, however, gives us the power to control that instinct/trait/demon/whatever, giving us a little bit of grandeur
