How different are "teenagers" now than from what we were ??!

Question: I am 38 and remember having quite a few insecurities when I was 15. I think I handled them pretty good, never talked back, never needed to express myself rudely. My parents were very disciplinarian (which today I realize was good) and still loved them. We were not rich, but I was involved in many activities in school. I loved to learn and just "cared" for the little things I had.
I observe "teenagers" now, with iPods, cellphones, good clothes and many are well mannered but the "rude" ones always stand out ! I went to College, graduated, made someone out of myself. Does "today's generation" even think about "College" ??

The biggest differance I see isnt in the teenagers, its in the parents. Im roughly same age as you , 36, and I recall my parents teaching me to respect all adults. Now I see parents backing up their kids when they are clearly in the wrong and it has made the teenagers of today a rude, lazy bunch to say the least.

Todays also think someone will do everything for them, I do not see that many who are independant. Scary really to think our futures as old fogies are hinging on this generation doing whats right.

I am only 23 but I was basically raise like you. Strict mother, she gave us what she could but we didn't get whatever we wanted. I had to work when i turned 16 to pay for my car insurance. I was raised with morals and values which I can say is not abnormal for my generation, but even kids today are SOO different then when I was a teenager. And that wasn't very long ago. I was just lucky I had a great mother who knew how to raise a child.

My main insecurity is whether I will seem or look cool. I know it sounds stupid, and it really is, but I hang around with some cool people, and I wnat to be like them. I don't know if you went through the same. I have others, but I'll not talk too much about them.

My parents are strict too. Which is a very good thing, and I've seen hte results of slack parenting. It sickens me how much these kids are pampered. Me, I am from a poor/intermediate family, and we never have very big Christmases. The biggest thing I have ever gotten was an iPod shuffle which was about fifty bucks. Then I look down the street at my neighbor 5th grader and he got himself a brand new powerwheels, ps2, video games etc. I used to be jealous, but now I'm glad I'm not spoiled, and I'm happy how I'm turning out. (I'm 15 BTW)
Ya, I care for most of my stuff. I have too much junk, and what good stuff I have I keep in mint condition. Anything nice that I want I buy myself. Anything like video games to a laptop I'm going to buy me before college.
Yes, teens are rude and need to respect people more, and I don't like it. I consider manners to be very important.
Yes, I think about college, and I'm not sure how I'm going to afford it, but my parents won't pay for it, so I have to pay all of it myself. I also have 13 siblings (yours mine and ours type thing here) so they teach me to be humble.

Oh lord if I talked to my mother the way these kids do now I would've got the sheeeet slapped outta me and would probably have a few missing teeth.

college?? thats a good one my kids are into making the $ and that they both are..today they are so much more arrogant(i am not saying all of them ) but so much wittier and spoiled..i never had a quarter of the stuff these kids have today..

I found your question....finally (not on pg 7 or 8 but 11)
Well, I'm 31 and raised very similar to you. (similar attitude also) But I knew plenty of kids back then who didn't care about college. It's the same today with some interested, and some not. Good kids and bad kids.
The difference now is they have so much more technology to help them on their way. Not just help, but more opportunities for job placement with a degree. But to your question of "interest" in teens now vs then, is a hard one to answer. Again, some do and some don't. Maybe a survey is in order of todays teens to see if they are interested in a college degree. And then another of adults who were interested in college when they were kids.
(then again...what's the % of people on YA! compared to the % of everyone else in the world)

Tough q to answer! good luck!

Excuse me, Clo, every generation is critical towards the successive one.
But I tink that more or less the young people today are like the others, not dumber, not more bad . It is the world of adults that is changed and influences the behavior of teenagers.
But, also today there are many young people that are worth, fortunately.

yeah i agree...but you can't blame them...i mean some of them have family issues!!....we should blame the parents for all of this!

~have a nice day~
