Lets not joke about this...I did HARD TIME for ripping the tag off the mattress...those are years I'll never get back.

That tag is to alert the Retailer, not the consumer.

The thing is, the tags are supposed to protect you. They were first required in the early 1900s because, back then, mattresses were sometimes made with disease-carrying materials or materials that attract bugs like animal fur, rags, horse hair -- sometimes even human hair. But these days the tags really come in handy, retailers say, to make sure your mattress isn't used, being sold as new, or if you need to fall back on your warranty.

As for anyone being arrested for removing it. I do not think that there has ever been a case in the court system about it.

Those tags are for the wholesaler and the retailer only..once it's yours..you can do what you want with them...
