If you were a teacher, how would you react to this?!

Question: One of your students was going to drop out and he told you that he would love to fail in life. He told you he would be so honored to clean toilets, scrap trash off porches and floors, and take out trash.

Whatever, go screw up your own life, kid.
sorry, but that is what I would say.
He's just trying to get attention

i'll just say "you wanna work for the Department of Sanitation? go ahead... they make more money than me"

I'd think the student was doing a number on me.

Present him with a math project:

How many toilets would he have to clean to buy a week's worth of groceries?

How many bags of trash would he have to carry to put gas in his car or to make a car payment?

How many porches would he have to clean out to take a girl to dinner and a movie?

How many floors would he have to mop to pay the rent?

Seriously...have him figure out the cost of each item above and how much he would make doing the chores he wants to do. Maybe it won't be so appealing after that.

it sounds like he needs help in boosting his self esteem/self confidence. I think I would see if I could arrange for someone from the town to come in and talk about the pro's and con's of that line of work.

Depending on his age....I would talk to his parents...or the guidance counselor for support on the issue.
