Are there really any long term ways of solving our housing crisis?!

Question: Sure the governments says they'll build a set amount of houses each year but they're going run out of space eventually right?

Thanks ever so much for your answers :)

There are only two ways to reduce the crisis...either build more houses, or reduce the number of people wanting houses....the Govt says that it is going to do something about the first....the problem is that a lot of people want to live in the south east of UK....which is vastly over crowded. There are large areas in the North where housing could be built on brown field sites, but for some reason, companies dont want to relocate there, nor does the Govt.....if they changed this and gave vast tax incentives for companies to re locate from the south east this would partially solve the problem.....and of course in another 40 years, most of us baby boomers will have died and if there is not a huge increase in immigration, the net population may decrease.

The town taht I live in has loads of empty buildings that could be converted into housing, and loads of boarded up houses too. I think they need to develope the land that is already wasted first before we start building 'quality executive homes in desirable places'. Concrete jungle before we know it.

one of the main problems is the number of houses with only one occupant.i believe 40%of houses now.
due to divorce ,people living longer.
you can not as one person suggested move people out of say a three bed house to make room for a family as there are no `spare` single bed places either
one solution i can see is for the goverment to fund houses at a very low interest rate to provide capitol for the scheme.also people will have to live in `town`(terraced) houses to save on building material and space.

Save your money THEN buy a house. Mortgages are keeping you in slavery.

Stop having children

Well digging up is out of the question so I guess down may be an option!

For a start off they could make what they do built a lot more affordable for those who are desperate to get on the property ladder, no good building houses then saying they want well over the odds for them, a lot of people who are desperate to get on the property ladder don't earn enough to go for mortgages of a £100,000 or more and that seems to be the price of most houses that are been built these days and we should also have a system in place that allows British born people first priority on the housing ladder and not those from outside, the system is very unfair in this country.

I'm going to add you as a contact =]

In answer to your question, no the government are smelly people =[

i no what u mean try living in the olympic city then constant construction and there is no space as it is everyone lives on top of each other and still they continue!!! give me the countryside anyday while there is some left i mean!!!

Well, they are trying. All new developments must have a certain percentage of affordable housing. There is more that can be done though.
Not much we can do about running out of space though! It's the way it is.
