The beaver, them little guys have the snap to dam up fast flowing rivers. And have you ever seen their front paws/hands. They actually have what looks like little fingers that can oppose one another to help them pick up and hold onto things.

At human scale, a black bear; or with modification a bonobo or orangutan. You'd need *very* heavy duty vehicles before turning a gorilla loose with them. Chimpanzees are smart and agile but too excitable. Among smaller creatures, assuming the equipment were properly sized, I'd put my bets on raccoons.

A chimpanzee fits the bill . A gorilla is too big, a monkey too small, and an orangutang too complicated
