Could You Stand A Lifetime of Solitude?!

People do it in solitary confinement in Prisons but it does shorten their lives. Being lonely and alone would drive one crazy. We all need a purpose to live. If one was to live a life of solitude then I would suspect people would start talking to themselves and acting strangely. Mental illness would probably be the norm and many people would die early unless they were to find a purpose to life. This reminds me of a movie entitled the last man on earth. One of the Twilight zone TV series was about a man who only wanted to read, read, and read. He worked in a bank and would go into the bank vault at lunch time to read and be solitude. One day while in the vault there was a world war. Everyone in the world was killed. Upon leaving the vault he was happy to be alone because now he could read the rest of his life and not be disturbed by any people as they were all dead. Then something bad happened. He broke his glasses at the steps of the Library and now he would have to live a life alone and with no books to read. With no purpose in life he was destined to die from a life of loneliness.
I don't think any of us are meant to do that.

Not total solitude. Even the most isolated hermit will hike across a mountain range to visit civilization.
Heck no. There's no way I could take it. I'm not a people person, but I'm sure as heck not a loner either. I need people!
Being alone would drive me crazy - if I could go crazy. Of course if I could go crazy being alone would have driven me there a long time ago.

But I do enjoy time alone, sometimes.
Sometimes I feel that's what I'm living, and sometimes it sucks.
