Bring up music....or movies.
talk about yourself. If they don't speak much and you ask them a question, they might just give you a short answer. Best thing is to talk about yourself but don't over run it!
It always helps to have good listening skills. If you really let yourself hear and consider what the other person is saying, you will think of more things to say.
If you still can't think of anything, just mention something totally random. You could have a few topics handy in your mind just in case.
Just look them straight in the eyes and yell "Say something you idiot."
