Like you just said, it's a fascination, people letting their imaginations explore the unknown, even if it's not real, some people want to represent an image that is not them. That's just the world we live in, and in the same sense some people like to see an Avatar that represents a fantasy to them, and they like to let their imaginations loose.

In this Internet environment, people can say some things they would never say in their own world, and remain anonymous. I guess it allows people to release their inhibitions.
I don't think there's any harm with that, unless it turns into harm.
