I like getting gift cards, some people say not to give them because it gives the impression that the giver didn't have the time or whatever to buy you an actual gift. However, I think they are good to give because then you can get whatever you need or want.

I'd rather receive a more personal gift. The gift really says something about the person giving it. Personally even if I have someone difficult to shop for and resolve to get them a gift card, I attach it to a "gag" gift that I picked out for them.
