Question: I don't know I have been wondering that myself because Nostradamus's predictions also stop at 2012. I saw that on t.v. and it concerned me. We will see though.

but my dads a very smart guy and he told me that if the world would ever be close to ending it would take a few thousand years

The world will end when God decides that it is supposed to end.
Some people say that the world will end in 2012, but it is somethig some people do not know. There could be an astroid, an earthquake that shakes the water and causes bubbles to go up and explode the world, and more. Their is really no answer for that question, unless you make a time machine.
