A bit of both usually. There was a guy I went to school with back in the day (he was a bit of a nerd - in the nicest possible way) and he created the word "afterism" as describing thinking of the perfect comeback after the person has left. I usually think of good comebacks, but after looking back in hindsight, you always think of something better you could have said and end up thinking, "if they ever say that again, I will have the perfect comeback". Funny thing is, they rarely give you the opportunity again to use your newly thought comeback
