I think for most people who become addicted to it, is just like a person can get addicted to a reality tv show.
This is just another form of entertainment. Appealing to those classes of people and their liking. So in this sense the get addicted to anime just like you or I could get addicted to The Real World/Road Rules Challenge. hahaha!

I think you have to be very stoned to enjoy the pretty colors, or something.

i guess people like anime because they like the unique style of illustrations and because they tend to be more imaginative when it comes to storytelling. i think that the exhibition of art (from graphics to storyboard) being displayed in japanese anime is more impressive that those compared to western cartoons.
personally, anime shows aren't my cup of tea. i don't like sci-fi and fantasy stories. i don't like historically altered anime. and with all my heart, i hate hentai anime!!!!!!!! but that doesn't mean i hate everything that is anime. there are some good anime shows that aren't typically unrealistic, and some even have a good storyline.
my picks are araiguma rascal (rascal the raccoon), ie no naki remi (remi the nobody's girl; it's a bitter story on child labor), honey and clover (it may look too cutesy, but if you take a good look on it, it's actually philosophical and well-observed), paradise kiss and gunslinger girl (yeah, they're cyborgs, but it tackles politics and morality very well and maturely compared to other cyborg anime shows). i would suggest watching them, if you want to think that all anime shows are stupid.
