When you do simple arithmetic do you use a calculator,your head,fingers or pen a!
Question: I am 62, so I went to school in the fifties, so we all learnt the multiplication tables at least up to 12 x (Or else)
I never found anything wrong with this and it honed the mind.
Later (early sixties), when I was an apprentice, I learned other tricks such a logarithms, (No calculators then) and simultaneous quadratic equations.
My friend, Billy Tierney from Duntocher thinks I am a mathematecal genius, and convinced our mutual friend Wullie Mearns as well.
Wullie is an expert with motor cars and Billy is an expert sales man.
I think you can see the point I am trying to make.
Most people who cannot handle mental arithmetic have talents which you and I cannot master.

most of the time i use my head but if i`m very tired or showing the kids how to do the maths then i use a pen & paper

Ok - you've got me. As an estiamte 8x8=64 and 9x9=81. So square root of 75 comes somewhere in between - say 8.5
8.5/9 = just less than 1.
Edit - Ok - I checked on a calculator - sq root of 75 = 8.66025404.
8.66025404/9 = 0.96225044888.
I wasn't far off.

I use my head for simple stuff - anything over 10 digits I use the dogs paws!
if i know immediately that it's not going to be a whole number, and i can usually tell that by looking - or if the number is is going to be into 4 or 5 digits...
then i'll use a calculator if i can find one... (on my mobile)...if not.. then i'll use paper.
otherwise i'll use my head.
I had to do a maths test for a job interview before christmas... managed to ace it without using pen/paper or any calculators.
Most definitely in my head its quicker!
