"Non-Christian" behavior and people...?!

Question: I have been to some church groups, meetings and Bible studies where the pastor/reverand and other church members make fun of homosexuals and believers of other religions. I have often heard some say that they will "Pray for these Non-Christians", and that they'll "pray for those who don't believe". It's like if you do not believe the norm in orthodox religion, or if you do not subscribe to a particular belief, you are damned and going to hell. This is my personal problem with organized religion, particularly Christianity.

I admit, I am still trying to decipher everything and find my true spiritual place, but I think of myself as a Christian and believe in God, I just have a problem with many of the things they say in Chruch and some Christian books.

Personally, I do not think that is is "Christian" to make fun of those who are different, or condemn people who do not believe as you do. What are your thoughts?

I understand telling someone you'll pray for them if they are sick,

I completely agree, and totally understand what you're saying. I have known Christians who have done the very things you've described. It's plainly and simply ignorance of other beliefs and diverse peoples.

What is sad is that many people use their Christian beliefs to shield themselves from other ideas, and truly never even study why THEY believe what they do!

Who is anyone to say they know what is going to happen to someone when they die? And who is any Christian to say that they know who will go to hell? I thought that was God's job.

What is really un-Christian-like? Hatred for others, pride (which is shown when they make fun of other people different from them) and a lack of compassion.. so it's kinda ironic.

religion is a business, and a scam.

I agree, I feel the same way. And you're right I don't think it's 'Christian' to make fun of anyone or look down your nose at others because they believe in something different.

I agree.

"He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.” Enough said. I think that sometimes a few Christians forget that aspect of their religion and would rather cast stones. The fact is that no one is perfect or without sin. Making fun of people because of they believe in another religion or due to their lifestyle is a lot like casting stones and an attempt to show others how much better the supposed Christian is in front of others and attempt to puff themselves up.

It seems as if today the term "Christian" is very broad. Ask 100 people if they are a "Christian, and at least 90 will tell you they are." That's one of the problems. A person's beliefs should not be based on opinions or thoughts of others. A person's beliefs need to be based on the Word of God. Understand that there is no perfect church, because there are no perfect people, but that does not imply that all churches are bad. Sin is sin, and one sin does not necessarily take prevalence over another. Christ instructed us to love one another and pray for one another. He never turned anyone away, and always displayed true love to everyone. We need to stop trying to be "religious" and make more of an effort to be like Christ.

That's the trouble with any religion - no matter how you dress it up as nice, the basic core belief is that you're right in your choice and EVERY other religion and it's followers is wrong. I have no need to believe in some great invisible magic thing in the sky to forgive me and make me a good person, I can do that myself. I'm gay, but feel no need to mock those who are straight or who like spinach or those who enjoy rap or who are Muslims or prefer the color green... or just about anything else. Good luck in your choices. :o)
