Do you tip at restaurants even if the service was below standard?!

Question: Do you leave something, nothing, or a nominal amount to let them know you didn't forget to tip, but the service was horrible.

I'm from the old school of tipping -- if the service sucked, I leave one penny. It speaks volumes.

On those few occasions were the dining experience was very bad, such as a truly rude server or bad food, I ask to speak with the manager.

The restaurant owes the paying customers a pleasant experience -- it is not a case of someone walking through the door being there solely to give the restaurant money for some sort of unwanted loitering. It's amazing how many places have that mindset -- like they're doing the customer a huge favor by allowing them to be there.

I don't ever feel like I have to leave a tip, but I almost always do. If the service I received was exemplary, then I will leave a generous tip. If I feel that my server was way below par, then not only will I not leave a tip, I will tell the server why I'm not leaving them a tip.

I always tip the person who waited on me even if the service was bad. My mom was a waitress before I was born and she told me of horror stories that waitresses have to put up with so I feel bad a leave a tip but if it was beyond horrible I will still leave a tip just not a big one

No - I have never been known to be shy! If the service is bad - I say so. If it is good I leave the usual 15 -20% (depending upon the type of restaurant)! CJ
Edit : In case you do not know - TIP means "to insure promptness" - !

i steal their tip box instead....

If the service sucks I give a really cheap tip. Waitresses know that tips make their money, so maybe they shouldn't be slow or rude.

I tip really good for good service though!

I think there's only been a few times I gave no tip at all. For pizza delivery- it took almost 2 hours to get to me and it wasn't hot anymore. it was still warm...but I had to heat it up.
at a restaurant the waitress spilled my drink on me and I had to wait forever for my food only to have a wrong order brought to me. I wasn't impressed.

I've tipped low before, but I've never had service so bad that I haven't wanted to tip at all.

I'll let them know exactly why I'm not tipping. I'm known for 18-20% in the places I frequent, and I understand the difference between a jammed kitchen (not the server's fault) to stuff that IS in the server's domain, such as making me have to ask for silverware and refills, taking ages to get me the check because she's chatting, etc.

If the service is horrible then I let them know WAY before it's time to tip

Tip regardless of their service

i'd leave a small tip. i never go out to eat though so i don't have to worry about it!! :)

I do. I know what it's like to work a service job, so I try to be fair. Who knows? Maybe my server just had to deal with a really rotten customer and was having a bad day as a result.

I think I may adopt " Pippi's " philosophy the next time I receive bad service or a rude waitress / waiter and leave just one penny. Never heard of that before, but it sounds like a great idea...!
