Where did the word "couch potato" come from ????!

Question: Bonjour madam

The term "couch potato" was first coined in 1976 by a friend of American underground comics artist Robert Armstrong. In the early-1980s, he registered the term as a trademark with the US government; he also co-authored a book with Jack Mingo, called The Official Couch Potato Handbook, which delves into the lives of couch potatoes.[1] [2]

The term eventually entered common American vocabulary, generally defining one who unceasingly watches television as a form of "Transcendental Vegetation (TV for short)." The phrase was entered into the Oxford English Dictionary in 1993. Mingo, the Minister of Information and Propaganda for the official Couch Potatoes organization, explained why the potato was chosen as a vegetable role model: "We're an underground movement, we're all eyes when planted in front of the TV, vegetation is an important part of our existence, and we're Tubers. Get it?" The potato was also chosen because of the potato chips that couch potatoes ate while watching television.

Amongst Canadians, adhering to colloquial vernacular, the couch potato is referred to as the Chesterfield Spud or a Jon Whyte

A couch potato refers to a person who spends most of his or her free time sitting or lying on a couch. This stereotype often refers to lazy and overweight men who watch a lot of television, sometimes in their underwear and sometimes drinking beer. Generally speaking, the term refers to a lifestyle in which children or adults don't get enough physical activity

I don't know, who cares.
All I know is that I have my couch potato moments.. all the time!

Some livin room in IOWA!!

*smile*

umm naybe coz potatoes are fat and round lol. so its like saying "couch lard"

Not sure, but if you met my friend Jaime....

tsomeone who is shaped like a potato and sits on a couch all day

No idea, at least not from me.

It came from joining the two English words "couch" and "potatoe"

My Couch is as the leather it represents
you can drop a potato in it a bit pledge dust the skins
of its sand and i rinse that health by boiling it Skin
and all as the heath needs its substance
not in the stuffed couch
it is the skin you are in that counts
Time to do my choirs that reminds me
a few minutes to fold up yesterday

I don't know, but I think it is unfair to the poor defenseless potato. The poor little tuber isn't hurting anyone, and to be stereotyped in a negative way is shameful! Now, when I go to the grocery store to buy potatoes, I feel their pain!

I think at one point in history there was a mom who was at home with her small child who was playing with the potato's. Anyway the child took a potato from his moms potato basket and it somehow ended up on the couch. Well, the mom was cleaning things up and putting things away like she always did and she came into the living room and seen this big fat huge potato laying there on the couch! I think in her mind it just struck her that when people lay around on the couch like that potato with its potato eyes staring at the TV and they don't move it is kinda the same thing. It made her think that that's a resemblance of people who sit on the couch staring at the TV all day. So as her child grew anytime he sat on the couch staring at the TV she would call him a couch potato and through the years the child grew, had children of his own and called his own kids couch potato's once in awhile and then his kids had kids and on and on down the line and now we all know what it means!
